Research of the Spreading and Primary Prevention in Periodontopathy

Abstract

The assistants in the Dental Clinic of the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade, Yugoslavia have researched the wide spreading problem and primary prevention in periodontopathy. Their results show as follows: — the necropolis findings in Novi Slankamen (VIII — IX AD) show spreading in parodontopathy among thirty — two graves, 60,7% skulls had this problem and the average age was 27,2. In Vinca (XII — XV AD) 76% was found with the same disease in fifty graves; the average age was thirty — two (the excavations were made in 1982)

- parodonthopathy was registered at 65,14% among 370 cadets of a secondary military school; the average age was 15 — 16 years old. This disease was also registered at 37,3% among 900 recruits aged 18 — 20, at 34,7% among 7140 privates average age 18 — 24, and 92,6% among young and senior officers aged 22 — 60 years old.

- the spread of parodonthopathy among one hundred juvenile diabetics aged 20 — 40 years rates 87%; while among the control group of non-diabetics, of the same age structure, the percentage rates 62,5%.

- a positive reduction of dental plaque, in 83 parodontal cases during a 15-month period, can be attained as much as 50% with only using regular daily dental hygiene.

- examinations made among 600 pupils aged 11 — 16, of which 200 were military cadets, showed that regular dental cleanings and daily personal use of synthetic toothbrush shows a large decrease in dental plaque.
