The author thinks that a chronic schizophrenic represents an exemplary form of a chronic psychotic condition. That is why he discusses clinical characteristics of a chronic schizophrenic and points to diagnostic difficulties in distinguishing between a chronic schizophrenic condition and schizoid psychopathy, patients who are affected by the phenomenon of hospitalism, as well as between other chronic psychotic conditions. After a short review of the factors causing schizophrenia, the author presents some data which tell about a better prognosis of schizophrenia in comparison with that at the beginning of the 2oth ct, owing to modern psychopharmac and socio-therapy treatments. Finally, the author considers basic aspects of the complex relationship between the society and a mental patient.
