Abstract

The contusion of thoracolumbar segment of spinal cord in rabbits caused by a strike of 27 p. cm caused a spontaneously reversible motor disfunction of hind legs, while provoked by a strike of 71 p. cm caused spontaneously irreversible paraplegy.

The intensity of motor deficit was parallel with the degree of histological changes in grey and white matter of spinal cord. The contusion of the cord caused an increase in CKUD activity in this tissue.

By changing the activity of adrenergic, dopaminergic, serotonergic, cholinergic neurotransmission and presynaptic and postsynaptic inhibition in the spinal cord, we were unable to improve motor activity of traumatised animals.

Piracetam and DHE significantly reduced mentioned disfunctions of hind legs, and significantly diminished the increase in CKBB activity in contusioned cord tissue. Piracetam and DHE caused their effect without influencing the activity of tested neurotransmittory systems.
