Share of Melatonin in Directing of Ultrastructural Thyreocyte Changes of Epiphyzecotomised and X-Irradiated Rats

Before treatment with radiation in dose 8 Gy gamma rays, Albino rats, Wistar, were pinealectomized and divided in two experimental groups. Group I received for fourteen days the 0,5 ccm ethanol solvent, and group II received melatonin in dose of 0,2 mg,0,5 ccm of solvent. 12* h day of post irradiation period all the animals were decapitated, and the glandular parenchyma were analysed by electron microscope. Thyreocytes of the group I reacted with destructive changes, while those which had been given melatonin (group II) reacted with less emphasised changes of the same type. The differences between thyreocytes of group I and group II suggest the possibility of radioprotective effects of melatonin.
