Abstract

Comparative investigations have been carried out to elucidate the mechanism of reactivity lin the FTA5 and FTA-ABS test of different sorbing agents (sonicate, sorbent and pure thioglycolate medium) with specific antigen (T. pallidum) on one side, and the group-specific antibodies on the other side.

It could be demonstrated that antigen (T. pallidum) alone combined with the investigated sorbing agents in the FTA5 is actually producing the more specific results and not the bindings of the respective sorbents with the group specific antibodies.

From the investigated agents only the sonicate had the ability to absorb also the group specific antibodies.

Consequently, the specific antigenic components of Reiter treponemes appear to be thermolabile and this part of the sorbent is in fact responsible for the increased FTA-ABS specifity.
