The authors are giving a review of the results reached so far in research of etiologic agent, infection mechanisms. clinical manifestations and the prevention of AIDS in the world and in Yugoslavia.
This study gets numerical and territorial expan.se of this disease in the USA, in African countries and the other parts of the world.
In Yugoslavia, by February 1989, there were 74 registered cases of AIDS with 35 lethal cases.
It is considered that IV drug users are the main possible transmitters of AIDS in our country.
Among 124 000 healthy blood donors there have been found 4 (0.003%) seropositive persons.
Within the past two years significant preventive and epidemic measures have been carried out in Yugoslavia under the guidance of the Federal Anti-AIDS Commission. These measures have been carried out in three directions:
- wide public education on this disease and the importance of condoms in personal protection,
- organizing and establishing serologic laboratories for Elisa testing, as well as specific education of health and other personnel in prevention of this disease,
- emphasising that AIDS is not only a health problem, but that it is as well an extremely significant social problem.
