Significance of Study of Hereditary Diseases for Planning Their Possible Control in Population of SR Bosnia and Herzegovina

Abstract

The three-year study (1905—1988) of hereditary diseases carried out in five clinics of the Medical Faculty (Sarajevo), showed that 518 registered cases of those diseases are only a tip of numerous nonreported cases.

Among 10 most reported diseases the most numerous are: diabetes mellitus (13.32%), schizophrenia (9,07%), hypertensio essentialis (8,30%). syndrome Down (7,7%), etc.

The author emphasises the significance of reported cases of hereditary diseases for the study of epidemiology and the possible control of those diseases.

This three-year study shows the necessity to regulate registration of hereditary diseases by law in the entire area of the Republic and to establish close collaboration between the Centre for Human Genetics, clinicians, epidemiologists, social workers and other experts linked with that problem.
