The Performances of the Electrically Stimulated Isolated Human Ureter as Model System for the Investigation of Neuromuscular Transmission

Abstract

The isolated human ureter obtained of a healthy donor after the kidney transplantation were used as a model-system. It was used for the evaluation of the effect of various substances on the neuromuscular transmission. The piece of the isolated human ureter was long 2—3 cm and was set up in an isolated organ bath in Tyrode solution. In the ureter platinum electrode was introduced and another electrode was in the organ bath. The ureter was stimulated transmurally with the constant stimulant in the constant one min. intervals.

Acetylcholine usually decreased the height of the induced contractions. Physostigmine decreased contraction and in some ureter caused block of the effect of the electrical stimulations. Atropine had no effect on the height of the contractions, so the preparation could be considered as atropine resistant organ. Noradrenaline, histamine and serotonin increased the contractions. Aminophylline and morphine decreased the contractions.

It is possible that there are unknown neurotransmitters in human ureter that induced contractions and relaxation. Isolated human ureter electrically stimulated in vitro could be used as a model-system for the pharmacological and toxicological investigations.
